Denim attack: everything we needed

Denim has always been an iconic fabric in the fashion system, capable of reinventing itself season after season. Here at Strike we are thrilled to present an exclusive selection of denim garments that embody the latest trends and satisfy the most refined tastes.

The History of Denim: From Chieri to San Francisco

Denim, the fabric that has made jeans an iconic garment, has a fascinating history dating back to the 15th century. The origins of denim can be found in Italy, specifically in Chieri, Piedmont, where a robust blue moleskin was produced and exported via the port of Genoa. This fabric was known as ‘Bleu de Gênes’, which the Americans would later mispronounce as ‘blue jeans’.

Another important production centre was Nîmes, France, where ‘serge de Nîmes’, a wool and silk twill dyed with indigo, was made. The term ‘denim’ comes from this French city.

In the 19th century, denim fabric became famous in the United States thanks to Levi Strauss, who founded his company in San Francisco in 1853 to provide durable clothing for gold miners. Modern denim jeans were invented in 1871 by Jacob Davis, who added copper rivets to reinforce the pockets.

Modern Times: from the 1970s to the present day

Denim has gone through several stylistic evolutions from 1970 to the present day. In the 70s, denim became a symbol of rebellion and counterculture, with the adoption of bootcut jeans and denim jackets by youth movements, who saw them as a means to express freedom and individuality. During the 80s, denim underwent a more commercial transformation, with the introduction of the stone-wash effect and the return of the slim-fit more structured jeans, reflecting a ‘cleaner’ and neater aesthetic. In the 90s, denim was characterised by the influence of the grunge movement, bringing the return of oversized trousers and jackets, with low-waisted styles becoming iconic for a more casual and eqasy-going  fashion, often paired with t-shirts and flannel shirts. Undisputed spokesman for this genre was the unforgettable Kurt Cobain, frontman of the band Nirvana. In the early 2000s, low-rise jeans reached the peak of popularity, with celebrities such as Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez wearing them, while other styles,  decorated with embroidery, rhinestones and glitter details also became popular. In the 2010s, the adoption of a more vintage look and the rediscovery of ‘mom jeans’ signalled a return to a bygone era, along with a growing interest in sustainability and second-hand fashion, which led to the use of recycled denim and more environmentally friendly production techniques. Today, denim continues to evolve, with an increased focus on comfort and sustainability, customised designs, the use of innovative technologies and the search for a balance between aesthetics and respect for the environment.
